Colours Collaboration

Shades of White

cherry pic

When I was very young life was black and white.
Then soured and distorted pain crept in,
Coloured me black.
I grew and learned a little more
Rejected the extremes ,
Widened my view.
Painted life a scene,
Scarred and knotted,
Faded remoniscences,
Composed of shades of grey..

In one glorious moment,
Unnanounced and unexpected.
Truth blazed through and swept away the dark
Freedom Revealed.
Beauty could be found in everything
Black, white, joy, pain, the choice was mine.
Truth was fluid and changing,
The panorama of my existence
Viewed through the glasses I chose.
Coloured in shades of white.

About The Project

The topic white proved to be the hardest topic for me to tackle so far. I wrote a poem "White" from my initial impressions on the colour white but could not find the inspiration for an image. Therefore I put the project on the back burners.

Months later on a beach holiday with my children I saw hundreds of white shells on the beach and suggested to the children that if we gathered a few perhaps we could make an interesting collage. As we gathered the shells it struck me how many different shades of white there were

Then my youngest son handed me a black shell, this got me thinking about black and white and shades of grey, and as I was on a positive high I thought that shades of grey implied negative aspects, whereas shades of white had echoes of seeing the positive in everything. With these thoughts the poem began to write itself.

The image was still hiding away though and once again the project was shelved for two months, then one night I began to have ideas. I scanned in handfulls of the white shells, trying them out in different shapes and arrangements. When I had something that felt aesthetically pleasing I applied a bladepro tracert filter. The effect produced reminded me of a topographical landscape. I used the lighting filter to illuminate and show up shades of white in the center area

I decided to add a symbol of me, a blend made of 3 photos from my life, one aged 3, one aged about 11, and one aged 38, the resulting image is me, but is not, it emits the positive side, the side that tends to hide and then is suddenly revealed in rare moments.

Though the hardest to do this is the project that has stretched me most both emotionally and in use of my digital art programmes and tools
