Hot Wax and Polar Coordinates

This tutorial will demonstrate how to combine the hot wax and polar coordinate effects to produce interesting images.

Before you start - download this ZIP file, which contains the attachments needed to complete the tutorial.

 
Standard Toolbar - New (image) button

Standard Toolbar - Open (imag) button


Standard Toolbar - Copy button

Getting Ready

Create a new canvas 350 x 350, and put to one side.

Open the dowloaded elephant image, or another image of your own choosing

Copy then paste as a new layer on to your blank canvas.
Close the original elephant image

 


Note

Apply the Aged Newspaper Effect

Use Effects || Artistic Effects || Aged Newspaper.
Set amount to age to 75 or experiment with other settings

Layer Menu - Layer Duplicate option

Apply the Hot Wax Coating

Set your foreground color to white.
Use Effects || Artistic Effects || Hot Wax Coating.

In the layer pallete right click on the elephant layer and duplicate.
Click on the duplicate layer to make it the active layer.
Rename as Elephant 2.
Use Layers || Arrange || Send to Bottom.

Apply the Polar Coordinates

Use Effects || Distortion Effects || Polar Coordinates.
Make sure Rectangular to polar is checked
I have used black but you might like to experiment with other colours.

Border

Creating The Frame

From the tool pallete choose the Magic Wand.

From the tool options pallete set the mode to Add.
Set the match mode to RGB Value.
Click on each corner piece,shown in black in this image.

Use the eyedropper to choose a deep beige color from the image for your foreground color.

Floodfill the selected corners.

Use Effects || 3D Effects || Inner Bevel with the following settings:
Bevel no 1 as seen in the image, Width=8, Smoothness=0, Depth=20, Ambience=0, Shininess=0, Angle=315, Intensity=50, Elevation=30, colour white.

Use Image || Add Borders
Set color to Black and size 10, symmetric.

And Here is your finished Image

You could always try experimenting with different textures and effects on the polar coordinates layer
Or even different settings on the polar coordinates.
Why not experiment.
