Corner
Cornered
she cowers in the corner
Arms wrapped around her head
to shield her from the vicious words
A frightened child who grew up
knowing only shame, and hate, and anger
Wounded constantly by those she loved
Untill at last she learned to hide,
her thoughts, her feelings, her very self.
So long ago now, but still present
For somewher deep inside
she still believes the words they said
Stupid, ugly, clumsy, worthless.
Branded a failure Time after time.
Somehow she learned to love, and trust
But not to love herself no matter how she tries
Her spirit is still cornered.
Held prisoner by memories she can't let go
Trapped by the parents she still holds inside.
About The Project
When I saw the word corner, I immediately thought about being cornered and the poem jumped into my head, once the poem was written there was obviously only one image to go with it.
The image was created using layers in paint shop pro. You can't see it any more but I started by drawing a corner using simple geometric shapes.
The image was an alien, cut up, and limbs rearanged (symbolizing feelings of alienation) I then applied hot wax effect just to the alien.
I wanted to show the pain that she/I was feeling, as for me pain is red/black and jagged I mouse drew simple jagged shapes and set them between the corner and the figure.
